Both materials are sold as the sensible choice for a Malaysian car porch, and both are — for different houses. Here is how they actually differ once they are up.
Heat: polycarbonate lets light in, ACP keeps it out
Aluminium composite panel is opaque. Nothing passes through it, so the space underneath stays noticeably cooler and darker. Polycarbonate is translucent — it blocks UV but still lets daylight through, which keeps a narrow side alley usable without a lamp burning all day.
If the awning covers a car porch you walk through, ACP is usually the better call. If it covers a wet kitchen or a side passage that would otherwise be pitch dark, polycarbonate earns its place.
Rain noise is the difference people underestimate
This is the complaint we hear most often about awnings installed by other contractors. Polycarbonate drums in heavy rain. ACP, with its solid core, is considerably quieter.
If the awning sits outside a bedroom window, we will steer you to ACP even when polycarbonate is cheaper. You only notice the noise after the first storm — by then it is too late to change.
Lifespan and what actually fails
- ACP: 10 to 15 years before the coating fades. The panel itself rarely fails.
- Polycarbonate: 7 to 10 years before yellowing becomes visible on the UV-facing side.
- In both cases the frame and fixings usually fail first if cheap steel was used.
That last point matters more than the panel choice. A premium panel on an under-specified frame will still sag and leak. Ask any contractor what gauge of steel they are quoting and what fixings they use.
Cost
Polycarbonate is typically 20 to 30 per cent cheaper installed. On a small side awning that is a meaningful saving. On a full car porch, the difference is often smaller than people expect once the frame is priced in — and the frame is the same either way.
So which one?
Car porch, main entrance, anything next to a bedroom: ACP. Side alley, wet kitchen, drying area, anywhere you want daylight: polycarbonate. If you are unsure, we will bring samples of both to the site visit and you can hold them up against the wall.
